Democratic Rep. Dylan Fernandes has won the Plymouth/Barnstable Senate seat race against Republican Rep. Matthew Muratore.
Fernandes garnered about 51% of votes to Muratore’s roughly 49% as of 12:01 p.m. Wednesday, according to election results from The Associated Press.
We won!” Fernandes said in a statement. “Thank you to our incredible volunteers who knocked on our 30,000 doors. We couldn’t have done it without you. Thank you to Matt Muratore for a thoughtful and cordial campaign. I look forward to getting to work for all the people of the Plymouth and Barnstable District.”
In a statement, Muratore said it was “unfortunate” that his campaign was short by about two percentage points.
“Thank you to the people of the Plymouth and Barnstable State Senate district for their support, and thank you to the citizens of my hometown of Plymouth for the opportunity to serve them in the Massachusetts House of Representatives, Muratore said
“Congratulates to Senator-elect Fernandes for a hard-fought race, and we wish him all the very best in his upcoming service to our community,” he added.
The district, which includes Kingston, Pembroke, Plymouth Bourne, Falmouth, Mashpee and Sandwich, is held by Democratic state Sen. Susan Moran.
The South Shore seat opened up after Moran announced she wouldn’t run for another term. Instead, she ran for Barnstable County Superior Court clerk.
Fernandes is a strong advocate of renewable energy, affordable housing, early education and immigration reform, among several other issues, according to his website.
Meanwhile, Muratore supports auditing the state Legislature, among other government transparency issues, according to his website. He also advocated to pause state spending on the migrant crisis and for fiscal responsibility.
